Our History
The Animal Shelter Society, Inc. was incorporated in 1959 by a small group of Zanesville ladies. In 1964, the Society became a corporation with IRS 501 (c)(3) designation. The first shelter building on Licking Road was constructed in 1968 and expanded in 1984. In 1988, a charity bingo license was obtained. The resulting steady boost to the Shelter funding enabled the establishment of a building fund, the hiring of full time employees and the ability to operate seven days a week. In 1999, the Shelter moved to its new location on Newark Road. In 2003, the Shelter broke ground to expand the building further and added a surgical suite which provides the much needed space for our veterinarian and his staff to do their work. In 2008, the shelter expanded the building further by adding additional office space, a community room, a second cat room and a larger holding/sick room.
For over 40 years, the Shelter's leaders have focused on raising the necessary funds and spending them judiciously to care for the area's abandoned animals. Contributions from so many in this community have also allowed the Shelter to serve the needs of the homeless animals of Muskingum County.
